Etymology
Μετανιώνω is the everyday spoken form of the older μετανοιώνω, itself a popular reshaping of the ancient verb μετανοέω. That verb combined the prefix μετα- (change, after) with νοέω (to think, perceive), so the original sense was to change one's mind. Over time the spoken language pulled the ending toward the pattern of νιώθω (to feel), giving the modern, informal μετανιώνω.
