Etymology
The word comes from κόμης, the Greek form of Latin comes, a title for a companion or officer of the emperor that later became the noble rank of count. The suffix -εία marks an office, territory, or institution. So κομητεία literally means the domain or jurisdiction of a count, and Modern Greek now also uses it to translate the English administrative term county.
