Etymology
Νόμισμα comes from the verb νομίζω, which meant to hold something as customary or to use it as current practice. Νομίζω itself derives from νόμος, meaning law or custom, rooted in the verb νέμω, to distribute or allot. A coin, in this view, is simply what a community has agreed to treat as valid tender.
