Etymology

The word is built from the prefix ανά- (up, back, again) attached to λαμβάνω (to take, receive). αναλάβω is the perfective non-past stem, used after θα or να to mean 'I will take on' or 'so that I take on'. Ancient Greek already had ἀναλαμβάνω with the same core sense of taking something up or resuming it. The deeper origin of λαμβάνω itself is disputed; many linguists treat it as pre-Greek rather than tracing it to a secure Indo-European root.
