Etymology
From Ancient Greek σχολή, which originally meant 'leisure, free time' — the spare time a free citizen spent on learned discussion rather than labor. Because such leisure was devoted to philosophy, the word shifted to mean the discussion itself, then the place of learning and the institution. It is built on the aorist stem σχ- of ἔχω ('to have, hold'). English 'school' is a borrowing of this very word through Latin schola.
