Etymology
A compound of the prefix αντί ('against, opposite') and the verb έχω ('to have, hold'), so literally 'to hold against' — to hold one's ground against a force. The sense narrowed from physical holding-against to enduring and withstanding. The verbal element έχω goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to hold, overpower'.
