Etymology
From Ancient Greek μοῖρα (moîra) 'portion, lot, one's appointed share or fate', a derivative of μείρομαι (meíromai) 'to receive as one's portion'. The personified Μοῖραι were the three Fates who apportioned each mortal's destiny. The underlying sense of dividing and allotting survives in both the 'fate' and the 'share/degree' meanings.
