Etymology
Derived from the Late Greek abstract noun ταυτότης, built on ταὐτό, a contraction of τὸ αὐτό ('the same thing'), plus the suffix -της/-τητα that forms nouns of quality. It thus literally means 'sameness' — the quality of being identical with oneself. The Latin philosophical term identitas (the source of English 'identity') was coined as a calque of this Greek word. In Modern Greek it has additionally taken on the everyday sense of 'identity card'.
