Etymology
From Ancient Greek δαίμων (daímōn) 'divine power, god, guardian spirit', traditionally connected with the verb δαίομαι 'to divide, apportion' — i.e. the power that allots one's fate. In Koine and Christian Greek the sense narrowed to 'evil spirit, demon', which is the dominant meaning in Modern Greek. The Latin daemon and English demon are borrowings from the Greek.
