Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἀνοίγω, a compound of the prefix ἀνά (aná, 'up, back') and the verb οἴγω / οἴγνυμι (oígō, 'to open'). The simplex οἴγνυμι is already attested in Homer, while the prefixed form became the standard verb 'to open' and was inherited directly into Modern Greek. The ultimate pre-Greek/Indo-European origin of the οἰγ- root is uncertain.
