εννοώto mean, to intendEtymology
Formed from the adjective ανόητος ('foolish, senseless') plus the abstract-noun suffix -ία. ανόητος in turn combines the privative prefix α(ν)- ('without, lacking') with a stem from νοέω / νοῦς ('to perceive, mind'), so the word literally denotes the state of being without sense. The deeper etymology of νοῦς itself is uncertain and lacks a securely reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root.
