Etymology
Ανόητος joins the negative prefix αν- with νοητός, the verbal adjective of νοέω, meaning to perceive or understand. Νοέω in turn comes from νους, mind or intellect. So the word literally means without understanding, and it came to describe a person who lacks sense: a fool.
