Etymology

Inherited from Ancient Greek ἐννοέω 'to have in mind, consider, conceive', a compound of the preposition ἐν 'in' and νοέω 'to perceive, think', itself derived from νόος (later νοῦς) 'mind'. The verb thus literally pictures holding a thing 'in the mind'. The deeper origin of νόος is debated and possibly Pre-Greek, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be assigned.
