χαίρω comes from Ancient Greek χαίρω (khaírō) 'to rejoice, be glad, take pleasure,' already attested in Homer. It derives from the Proto-Indo-European root *ǵʰer- 'to like, desire, yearn for.' The same root underlies a rich Greek family including χαρά 'joy' and χάρις 'grace, favour.'
