Borrowed into Modern Greek from Italian 'sicuro' (compare Venetian 'siguro'), itself from Latin 'securus' ('free from care, safe'), a compound of 'se-' ('without') and 'cura' ('care'). It entered Greek during centuries of Venetian and Italian commercial and maritime contact, joining the large stock of Romance loanwords in everyday speech.
