Etymology
Derived from the noun κανόνας / Ancient Greek κανών ('rule, measuring rod, standard, canon') plus the productive adjectival suffix -ικός. The literal sense is 'conforming to the rule', which broadened into the everyday meaning 'regular, normal'. The base κανών itself goes back to κάννα ('reed, straight rod'), a word of Semitic origin, so the ultimate root is not Indo-European.
