φιλιέμαι is the mediopassive present of φιλώ, meaning to love or kiss, built on the root φιλ- found in φίλος, dear or friend. The passive ending -ιέμαι marks present mediopassive forms in Modern Greek contracted verbs of this class. The deeper origin of φίλος itself is disputed among scholars, and some regard it as a word Greek borrowed from a pre-Greek substrate rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary.
