Etymology

Ιδιαίτερος is built on ίδιος, the Ancient Greek word for one's own or private, extended with -αίτερος, a comparative-style ending. The literal sense is close to more one's own, which narrowed in Modern Greek to particular, special, or private. The deeper origin of ίδιος itself is disputed among linguists, and no secure Indo-European root has been established for it.
