Etymology

The verb comes from ξεφεύγω, built from the prefix ξε- (from ancient εκ-/εξ-, meaning out of or away from) and φεύγω, the ordinary Greek verb for to flee. Ξεφύγεις is the second person singular of the perfective stem, the form used after θα (future) or να (subjunctive). The base verb φεύγω goes back to Ancient Greek φεύγειν, from a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to flee.
