σκοπόςaim, purpose, or watcherσκοπεύωto aim, to observeEtymology
The word joins the prefix κατά (down, thoroughly) to σκοπός, a watcher or one who looks at something. Ancient Greek already used κατάσκοπος for a scout sent to observe an enemy camp. The sense of watching closely carried straight through into modern Greek, where it now means spy.
