Etymology
σκοπεύω comes from the noun σκοπός, meaning target, watcher, or purpose. σκοπός traces to the ancient Greek verb σκέπτομαι, to look or watch, which goes back to the PIE root *spek-, to observe. The verb-forming suffix -εύω turns the noun into an action, to act toward a target. That action split into a literal sense, to aim, and an abstract sense, to intend.
