The word combines the prefix περί, meaning around or exceedingly, with a form related to φαίνομαι, to appear or shine. In ancient Greek the compound first meant conspicuous or eminent, someone who stands out and appears above others. Over time the sense narrowed to the emotional state of pride that Modern Greek uses today. The variant υπερήφανος, built with υπέρ (over, above) instead of περί, carries the same core meaning.
