Etymology

The word comes from Ancient Greek ἔμπορος, built from the prefix ἐν- (in, on) and πόρος (passage, way, crossing). It originally meant a passenger or traveler, someone who went on board a ship for a journey. Because such journeys were usually made for business, the sense narrowed over time to trader or merchant.
