Etymology

Ιδιοκτησία is a compound built from ίδιος, meaning one's own or private, and a noun from the verb κτάομαι, to acquire or gain possession of. Together they form an abstract noun for the state of owning something as one's own. Greek grammarians formed such -ία abstracts productively from verb stems, and this word became the standard legal term for ownership in Modern Greek.
