Etymology

Μαζεύω comes from μάζα, the Ancient Greek word for a lump or mass, most often a mass of kneaded barley dough. The verb-forming suffix -εύω turned the noun into an action: to bring things into one mass. Over time the sense widened from kneading into a lump to gathering scattered things together, and later to collecting, picking, or tidying up in general.
