Etymology

The word joins σύνταγμα, meaning regiment (from συν-, together, plus the stem of τάσσω, to arrange or draw up in order), with -άρχης, meaning ruler or commander (from άρχω, to rule or command). Together the parts mean roughly commander of a regiment. Greek adopted the rank as it built a modern national army in the nineteenth century, modeled on other European military hierarchies.
