Etymology

Ανατολικός is built from ανατολή, the Greek word for sunrise or the east, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning "pertaining to". Ανατολή itself comes from the ancient verb ανατέλλω, "to rise" (used of the sun), formed from the prefix ανά- ("up") and the verb τέλλω. So the adjective's core sense is "of the place where the sun rises", hence "eastern". The same root ανατολή gives English the place name Anatolia.
