Σημαία comes from σήμα, meaning sign or mark, with the feminine adjectival ending -αία attached. The original sense was something like the sign-bearing one, an object marked to signal identity or rally troops. By the Byzantine period the word had settled into its modern meaning of a cloth flag or standard.
