Etymology
In Ancient Greek, κόμμα meant a piece cut off, or a stamp struck on a coin. It came from the verb κόπτω, to cut or to strike. The political sense, a faction cut off from the larger body politic, is already attested in antiquity and was revived when Modern Greek needed a word for party. The punctuation sense, comma, comes from the same idea of a short cut or break in a line of text.
