Etymology

The word comes from the verb διαρρήγνυμι, built from the prefix δια- (through, apart) and ρήγνυμι (to break, burst). The noun διάρρηξη is formed on the aorist stem of that verb and originally meant a violent breaking apart. Modern Greek narrowed the everyday sense to forcing open a door or lock, hence burglary, while medical and technical registers kept the older sense of rupture or breach.
