Etymology
Διατάζω descends from Ancient Greek διατάσσω, built from the prefix διά- (through, across) attached to τάσσω (to arrange, to post in order, to appoint). The base verb τάσσω already carried military and administrative force in classical Greek, describing the arranging of troops or the fixing of rules. Modern Greek narrowed the sense of the compound to issuing a command, though the noun forms still preserve the older idea of arrangement or provision. Beekes classifies τάσσω as a word of Pre-Greek origin, so no secure Indo-European root is reconstructed for it.
