Etymology
Πληθυσμός comes from the verb πληθύνω, meaning to increase or multiply, which itself comes from πλήθος, meaning crowd or multitude. The suffix -σμός turns the verb into a noun of result, so the word literally names the state of being many. Modern Greek narrowed this general sense of multitude to the specific demographic sense of population.
