Etymology
Πηδιέμαι is the mediopassive present of the verb πηδάω/πηδώ, "to jump" or "to leap". The root πηδ- goes back to Ancient Greek πηδάω, whose ultimate origin is not settled; some scholars link it to πέδον, "ground", others treat it as a word of unclear, possibly pre-Greek origin. The passive form kept the literal sense "to be jumped" but in modern spoken Greek it shifted to a coarse, everyday way of saying two people are having sex.
