Etymology
The word builds on χίλιοι/χίλια, the Greek word for 'thousand', which goes back to Ancient Greek χίλιοι. Modern Greek adds the informal suffix -άρικο, which turns a number into a colloquial name for a banknote or coin of that value. The pattern shows up in other everyday money words, such as πεντακοσάρικο for a five-hundred note and εικοσάρικο for a twenty. Originally χιλιάρικο named the old 1000-drachma note, and the plural χιλιάρικα simply means several of them.
