Etymology
The verb goes back to ancient Greek ἀποδεικνύω, built from the prefix ἀπό (from, away, off) and δείκνυμι (to show, to point out). The original sense was to point something out fully or bring it into view, which shifted toward the modern sense of establishing a fact through evidence or argument. The root δείκνυμι itself is one of the oldest verbs of showing in Greek and stays productive across the whole word family.
