"αα" is a written shorthand for the ancient Greek word ἀνά (aná), which meant "throughout" or, used distributively, "apiece, for each." Scribes and pharmacists doubled the letter to show that a stated quantity applied equally to every ingredient just listed, much as "pp." doubles "p." for "pages." The mark passed into Byzantine medical recipe books and survives today mostly in old-fashioned pharmacy and cookery instructions.
