Etymology

Ξόρκι is a colloquial shortening of the verb ξορκίζω, itself from εξορκίζω. That verb joins the prefix εξ- (out, thoroughly) with ορκίζω (to make someone swear), from όρκος (oath). The original sense was to bind or drive something out by invoking an oath, the same idea preserved in the English word exorcise. Over time the noun narrowed to mean a magic spell or incantation, especially in folk tales.
