Etymology

Αδελφότητα is built from αδελφός, the Greek word for brother, plus the abstract-noun suffix -ότητα, which corresponds to English -hood or -ity. Αδελφός itself is traditionally explained as α- (copulative, meaning together) joined to delphys, an old word for womb, so a brother is literally one from the same womb. The suffix -ότητα turns a quality or relation into an abstract noun, the same pattern seen in ταχύτητα (speed) or ελευθερότητα (freedom).
