Etymology

Πανεπιστήμιο is a compound built from παν- ("all") and επιστήμη ("knowledge, science"), joined by the institution-forming suffix -ιο. It functions as a calque of the Latin universitas, which also meant "the whole" before it narrowed to mean a corporate body of scholars. The Greek coinage dates to the modern era, when the word was created for the new institutions modeled on European universities.
