Etymology

Πορτοφόλι entered Greek from Italian portafoglio, a compound of portare (to carry) and foglio (sheet, leaf of paper). The word originally named a folder for carrying loose papers or documents, and later narrowed to the small case people use for money and cards. Greek borrowed the Italian form directly during centuries of trade contact, especially through Venetian and Genoese merchants in Greek ports.
