Etymology
χειροκρότημα is a compound of χείρ (hand) and κρότημα (a bang or clatter), from the verb κροτώ, to clap or strike with a sharp noise. The word literally points to the sound made when hands strike together, which is why it means applause. χείρ goes back to an old Indo-European word for hand, while κρότος is often treated as an echoic formation without a secure further root, so no PIE root is given for the compound as a whole.
