Word family
Etymology
Αλλεργία is a modern coinage built from Greek άλλος (other) and έργον (work, action), joined by the abstract-noun suffix -ία. The Austrian pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet assembled it in German as 'Allergie' in 1906 to describe an altered, or 'other', reaction of the body to a substance. Greek then adopted the word back from this scientific German usage.
