Etymology

Greek borrowed μπανάνα directly from a Western European language, most likely Italian or French, in the modern era, since the fruit and its name were unknown in antiquity. Those European languages in turn got the word from West African sources, possibly Wolof, during the period of Portuguese and Spanish trade contact in the 16th and 17th centuries. The word entered many world languages through this same colonial trade route with little change in form.
