Μπλέκω is a colloquial reshaping of the older εμπλέκω, built from εν- ("in") plus πλέκω ("to weave, plait, braid"), a verb inherited from Ancient Greek. Πλέκω goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root for plaiting and weaving. The past form έμπλεξε carries the augment έ- typical of Greek past tenses, and literally describes someone being woven into a situation, that is, entangled or dragged in.
