Etymology
Φρικτός is a verbal adjective built on the same stem as φρίκη, meaning shudder or horror, and the verb φρίττω, to shudder or bristle. The suffix -τός marks a quality caused by the root, so the word literally means something that makes one shudder. The deeper origin of the φρικ- root is not settled. Beekes treats φρίκη as likely pre-Greek, so no secure Indo-European ancestry can be claimed.
