Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ἀθλητής, an agent noun built on the verb ἀθλέω, meaning to compete for a prize. That verb in turn derives from ἄθλος, meaning a contest, feat, or trial of strength. The deeper origin of ἄθλος is not settled among scholars, so no secure root can be given. English took the word almost unchanged as athlete.
