Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek άθλος, meaning a contest or a feat of labor, the same root that gave us αθλητής, an athlete. The suffix -ικός turns the noun into an adjective, so αθλητικός literally means related to contests or athletic pursuits. English borrowed the word directly as athletic.
