Etymology
Σαράντα comes from Ancient Greek τεσσαράκοντα, a compound of τέσσαρες (four) and the decad suffix -κοντα, meaning roughly four tens. Over centuries of spoken use the word contracted and the consonants softened, producing the Modern Greek form σαράντα. The same underlying root for four appears across the Indo-European family in the words for forty.
