Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek άρουρα, meaning tilled or arable land, plus the adjectival suffix -αίος, meaning belonging to. So αρουραίος first meant of the field, as in the phrase αρουραίος μυς, field mouse. Over time the noun μυς dropped away and αρουραίος stood on its own as the word for rat.
