Απέτυχε is the third-person singular aorist of αποτυγχάνω, built from the prefix από- (away, off) and τυγχάνω (to hit the mark, to attain, to happen upon). The compound verb originally meant to miss the mark or fail to attain something, and it settled into the general sense of failing. The same root τυγχάνω gives Greek τύχη, meaning luck or fortune, since hitting or missing the mark was tied to chance.
